My ballet business has led me to some life-long friends, none of whom I would have met if it wasn't through our mutual love for the beauty of ballet.

An interview with Tiny Toes Ballet mum, Sara Keli

Sara isn’t a dance mum… and that’s what drew her to Tiny Toes Ballet. She loved the relaxed feel, the no-fuss concert and the nurturing approach of the teachers. “When Olivia, my eldest daughter, was two she showed an interest in dancing. I had a look around at a few ballet schools and got a good vibe from Tiny Toes Ballet. Now both of my girls dance with Tiny Toes Ballet and we haven’t looked back.”

What does my child DO in ballet and dance class?

Our number 1 question explained…

“so, what does my child DO in ballet and dance class?”

The programme at Tiny Toes Ballet is unique. Our magical ballet dance classes have imagination as their theme. This aids in engaging the children while they are dancing and uses their creativity and expression.

each preschool ballet dance class contains

  • A familiar warm-up before we dance. We warm up our feet, our ankles, our arms and legs, our backs and core in a circle at the start of each lesson. Introduce and welcome new friends!
  • Dance classes based on the Royal Academy of Dance portion. This is where the hidden ballet and dance occurs. For example, the children are rising up and reaching for the stars, or tapping their pointed toes on a hidden trap door. The children will jump like clockwork bunny rabbits, skip to the forest or balance on one leg in the hot sand.
  • Kids will love our ‘free dance‘ section. This encourages the expression of movement to beautiful ballet dance music. It allows freedom of choice, builds confidence and encourages creativity.
  • A cool down.

each kindy/year one class contains

  • A familiar warm-up before we dance. Introducing correct ballet posture, strengthening exercises, feet pointing and ballet stretches, waking our muscles up and preparing them for dance.
  • A balanced Royal Academy of Dance class. This is where the learning occurs taught with beautiful imagery. For example, the children ‘pick up feathers or flower petals’ with exercise for hands, show demi plies ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ in bend and spin, fly like cannonballs in run and leap.
  • Age-appropriate music and jazz dance moves. Strong technique, ballet stretching with an ethos of fun.

we teach & reinforce

  • Ballet Terminology/Vocabulary: First Position, Points, Demi Plies, Gallops, Jumps, Arabesque, Port De Bra, Pirouette etc.
  • Ballet Technique: for example when teaching a Gallop, the teachers talk about squeezing legs together. Or making ‘a diamond’ when teaching a Demi Plies.
  • School readiness and reinforcement: counting, colours, left and right, taking turns, lining up, using their hand before speaking to really practise for school readiness.
  • Respect: We thank our parents and our teachers by curtsying at the end of the class.
The learning at Tiny Toes Ballet is hidden. The children are doing ballet and they don’t even realise it!

Ballet and Jazz for Kindy and Year 1

5 reasons why your kids should dance in kindy & year 1

So why is dancing good for my child?

    1. rhythm and musicality

During our kindy dance classes kids are exposed to different types of musical instruments and rhythms; With age-appropriate music and choreography, our Kindy kids learn best with familiar songs that are aimed at their age level that make Mum happy too!

    2. skills for school and dance class etiquette

Kids learn more than just dance. Lining up, taking turns, following 5-part instructions, left and right, manners and more. Thus strengthening their listening skills and ability to learn and pick up quickly.

    3. nurtures confidence, boosts self-esteem and enhances focus

Consistent, caring adults are important for kid’s healthy development. The rapport/strong bond between a ballet and dance teacher and their students is very special. A child’s first ever ballet teacher is a hugely important person in their lives. Learning processes involve internalizing, rehearsing and repeating. Kids feel a huge sense of accomplishment through skills learnt in dance class.

    4. enriches cultural appreciation and knowledge

Children who dance gain an appreciation of classical ballet, if not to make dancers then to make an appreciative audience.

    5. promotes bonding between like-minded students who enjoy music and dance

Ballet friends are lifelong friends! Through shared experiences, strong bonds are made. When the chips are down at school it is always nice to have another circle of friends.

Kindy is the perfect time to introduce ballet and jazz dance movement vocabulary at a faster pace, and with higher expectations.

          Tutu Cute

How to know if it’s a good ballet school?

a good ballet school meets your child’s needs

The ballet classes at Tiny Toes Ballet are based on the Royal Academy of Dance’s International Curriculum. As a result, our ballet classes address young children’s cognitive, motor and effective development. We use age-appropriate music and choreography. Movement is the medium through which creativity, expression and musicality are developed. There is no set uniform at Tiny Toes Ballet, so your child is welcome to wear what makes them feel comfortable. Fairy dress, dress up costume, leotard and skirt or bike pants and t-shirt.

a good ballet school offers a stress-free experience

Tiny Toes Ballet offers a range of ballet classes in the morning and afternoons throughout the school term. All our facilities are located near cafes, shopping centres and parking. There is no pressure at Tiny Toes Ballet.  If you’re looking for a relaxed, fun and imaginative introduction to dance for your child, then Tiny Toes Ballet may be the right fit for you. You won’t feel like you’re just a number. You will be joining the Tiny Toes family.

a good ballet school has highly trained & caring staff

All teachers at Tiny Toes Ballet are fully trained in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus. Every one of our staff has a Working with Children Check. Our teachers love and adore the little children in their lives, supervising them from the time they enter the class until they hand them back to their parents.

a good ballet school has capped classes

To create the best learning environment for our kids, Tiny Toes Ballet caps classes at 13 students with 1 teacher or 16 students with 2 teachers. Capped class numbers ensure individual student attention & increases student achievement.

a good ballet school offers a varied programme

The syllabus at Tiny Toes Ballet has imagination as its theme and is designed to engage and stimulate your child’s creativity and self-expression. The programming is so clever, using lots of imagery, props, little rhymes and games that teach the fundamentals of ballet. There is also school readiness/reinforcement; lining up, making a circle, taking turns, counting, following directions. The kids are learning ballet without realising it.

For our Kindy & Year 1 students we offer Primary Dance Academy. These classes are based on the Royal Academy of Dance’s International Curriculum. The classes are specially aimed at school level. Our ongoing teacher training and quarterly updates to our programme ensure a high standard of technique that we are justifiably proud of.

This formal programme enables our teachers to create strong and confident little dancers. As a result, we teach flexibility, technique and dance class etiquette with age appropriate music and dance steps. This ballet class challenges students technically whilst learning the joy of ballet and jazz.

a good ballet school has a gorgeous concert

At Tiny Toes Ballet, our end of year graduation concert is magical. You can bring as many family and friends as you like without having to pay for seats. In addition, you are welcome to take photos and videos of your own child. Your child’s concert will be held in the last lesson of Term 4 during your child’s usual class time, day and venue.

The dancers wear a beautifully themed age-appropriate tutu and have fun showing off the dances they have learnt during the term. And because your child is perfect just the way they are, they do not need to wear makeup.

a good ballet school offers makeup lessons

Miss a class? No problem, Tiny Toes Ballet offers 2 makeup lessons per term.

a good ballet school supports the community

A cause close to our hearts is Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic illness that affects 1 in 2,500 babies born in Australia. There is no cure at present and people with cystic fibrosis have to undergo constant physiotherapy and treatment throughout their lives. A portion of each child’s registration fees is donated to Cystic Fibrosis NSW. Throughout each year we hold fundraising concerts, crazy sock days and other activities to raise money and awareness of this life-threatening illness.

We hope that one day, CF stands for Cure Found!

In addition, we see the Sugarplum Fairy and her dashing cavalier inhabiting this dreamy realm.

Take a peek at our 2017 kids dance concert!

Look at our divine preschoolers in their gorgeous sugar plum fairy tutus. We love the fairy wings at the back. In 2017, our Kindy and Year 1 students danced to Alice in Wonderland.

Our end of year kids dance concert is magical. You can bring as many family and friends as you like without having to pay for seats and are welcome to take photos and videos of your own child. Your child’s concert will be held in the last week of Term 4 during your child’s usual class time, day and venue. The dancers wear a beautiful themed tutu and have fun showing off the dances they have learnt during the term.

At the end of our kids dance concert, your child will receive an exclusive Tiny Toes Ballet medal and certificate.

Tiny Toes Ballet concerts aren’t like any other kids dance concert you’ve ever been to. Imagine a kids dance concert that lasts the whole lesson with you watching your child dance for free. Up close and intimate, now that’s a dance concert with a difference! We have no make up and no ticket costs, just a gorgeous in-class concert for you to view!

                Jump for joy

Do you want brilliant ballet fun, technique yet still age appropriate?

Ballet is a perfect choice for parents who are looking for an activity that combines fun, creativity and exercise.

Tiny Toes Ballet goes the extra mile to ensure a magical experience for everyone.

The Tiny Toes Ballet program is based on the Royal Academy of Dance International Syllabus, but when the children are here, it doesn’t feel like they’re doing ballet.

Instead, they will be walking on tightropes with parasols, painting rainbows in the sky with ribbons and galloping with ponies.

Many people have a view of ballet as rigid and restrictive, but Tiny Toes Ballet takes a different philosophy.

Our ballet classes are intended to stimulate the imagination and foster your child’s creativity in a unique way.

                age appropriate costumes and music

Many parents these days are rightly concerned about the age appropriateness of many dance costumes and music, not to mention feeling uncomfortable about putting makeup on their toddler or young daughter for performances.

At Tiny Toes Ballet, we believe that children should be children. We don’t use makeup and have beautiful age appropriate costumes for performances.

There is no set uniform, so your little dancer can express their own individuality and creativity while being comfortable during their classes.

                engaging and fun

Ballet for young children should be joyful and fun, not rigid and boring.

Our focus is on engaging students and helping them develop self-confidence and creativity as much as their technical dancing skills.

It’s not just for your little one either – our Dance with Mummy program is designed for children aged 2.5 years and older and lets mum, dad or nana dance alongside their little one for a beautiful experience for everyone.

                stress-free for everyone

At Tiny Toes Ballet, we aim to take the stress out of the whole process. All our facilities are located near cafés, parking and shopping centres.

We run classes at convenient times throughout the school term, including afternoons and weekends. If you miss a class it’s no problem, you can do a makeup class.

                    From Mum to Teacher

I am Laura. Some of you may know me as Miss Laura as I have the pleasure of teaching some of your very gorgeous children.

My journey with Tiny Toes Ballet began several years ago when I walked into my first ‘Dance With Mummy’ class with my then two year old. Having been a dancer for the best part of three decades and a ballet teacher for 15 years I had done my research and picked what I considered to be the best preschool dance programme available for my little ballerina. Needless to say I was not disappointed. In fact, I loved the programme so much, that I am now one of Tiny Toes Ballet’s senior teachers and let me tell you, I have the best job in the world.

tiny toes ballet follows the royal academy of dance syllabus

                    Queen RAD

So I guess some of you may be wondering why I chose Tiny Toes Ballet over the other programmes available in our area. The biggest draw card for me was that Tiny Toes Ballet are affiliated with the Royal Academy of Dance (also known as the RAD) which is one of the largest and most influential dance education and training organisations in the world. It has over 13,000 members spread across 83 countries and the Academy’s patron is none other than Her Majesty herself Queen Elizabeth II, so it could easily be said that the royal grandchildren and great grandchildren are probably learning the same syllabus that is being taught to my own daughter at Tiny Toes Ballet.

                    internationally recognised, time-honoured, comprehensive curriculum

                    Queen RAD 2

The Royal Academy of Dance offers an internationally recognised, time-honoured, comprehensive curriculum, grounded in educational and developmental theory. Students start with the Dance to Your Own Tune curriculum, which is what we deliver in our Tiny Toes Ballet classes. They then move through the Pre-Primary and Primary levels which we deliver in our Primary Dance Academy programme.

But it doesn’t end there, upon graduating from Tiny Toes Ballet, our students are well equipped to go on to attend higher dance training organisations where they can continue to study the Royal Academy of Dance’s eight graded and six vocational graded levels partaking in internationally recognised examinations and assessments.

I could go on but I will wrap it up here. From one mum to another mum who just happens to be a qualified ballet teacher, trust me when I tell you that you have chosen the best possible program for your little one to start their journey in dance. A journey that I hope will bring a lifetime of enjoyment and appreciation of the art of ballet.
